As a circuit and wider Christian community, we meet together on every other month (4th Monday of the month) to spend the time to come before God in prayer.
Prayer is one of the means of grace identified by John Wesley, and it holds an important place our Methodist theology and Christian discipleship. For Wesley, prayer was not merely a religious duty or a way of presenting our requests to God. It was one of the ways through which God makes His grace available to us, helping us grow in faith, holiness, love, and our relationship with Him.
While our God is all knowing, we still need to live prayerful lives. This is important because:
– God desires a relationship with us. Prayer is not about informing an uninformed God; it is about drawing near to the God who knows us (even parts of our lives we think no one else knows).
– Prayer expresses our dependence on Him. It acknowledges that we are not self-sufficient and that we need God’s wisdom, grace, and strength.
– Prayer participates in God’s work. Throughout Scripture, God invites His people to pray for others, for justice, for healing, and for the coming of His kingdom.
– Prayer aligns our hearts with God’s purposes. As we pray, we learn to desire not only what we want for ourselves but also what God desires for the world. “Let your will be done on earth as it is done in heaven.”
Jesus himself prayed and he taught his disciples to pray. We therefore have a good example that we can follow.
Our God is not deaf to our prayers, in his time and in his chosen manner he will respond, ours is to have faith.
“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” Matthew 21:22
